The guys over at O2 Guru TV have been checking out the Samsung Galaxy S3. Presenters Nicola and Maddie went along to the Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 event held in Earls Court, London.
The S3, which will be available soon on 02, comes in a choice of either “Pebble Blue” or “Marble White”. The phone packs a punch in the display department, with a 4.8″ HD Super AMOLED 1280×720 display and a super slim bezel edge. The s3 comes in at just 8.6mm thick and weighs only 133g.
The phone comes complete with an 8MP auto focus camera with an array of useful features, such as burst shot, buddy photo share and best photo. This latter feature makes sure you never miss a smile or catch someone blinking. It works by automatically taking a burst of eight pictures, making a continuous scene, and will even choose the best one for you.
In addition to the main camera, which can also shoot video in full HD 1080, the Galaxy S3 has an additional 1.9MP front facing camera which is obviously ideal for things video calling.
Following a trend in new smartphones, the S3 comes with a voice recognition system they call “S-Voice” which enables you to do things like setting (or turning off!) an alarm, answering or rejecting calls and even telling the camera when to shoot.
Another feature on the S3 is ‘Social Tag’ lets you link the faces in your photo album with their social media streams, enabling you to look at their pictures and see their current status.
The power behind the phone comes from Samsung’s very own 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor, partnered with 1GB of RAM and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

Like us, you’re probably well acquainted with the process of grappling around under your stairs (or some other inaccessible place) with a torch, trying to decipher your gas meter in the vain hope of getting a reading. Well, we’ve got some good news – British Gas have announced plans to provide ‘Smart Meters’ in all homes by 2019. In fact, they’ve already started the roll out with over 160,000 homes now hooked up.
So, what is a Smart Meter? Well, it look pretty similar and will still be in a tucked away place, but now it will effectively reads itself! This new meter will communicate to an in-home display unit (aka ‘Smart Energy Monitor’), giving you an instant view of your energy consumption – both for gas and electricity. Another great thing is that British Gas, as part of the government’s plan to get all homes on smart meters, are installing their system for free.
The monitor will display, in near-real time, information about your energy usage (kWh), CO2 emissions as well as how much you’ve spent. It will also keep historical usage data so you can check how you’re consumption is changing over time. The meter will automatically transmit meter readings back to British Gas once a day, which (thankfully!) means the end of those fiddly meter readings and also, perhaps more importantly, the end of estimated bills.
Another interesting benefit of getting homes on to smart meters, is that it enables energy suppliers to monitor the amount of electricity being distributed and can therefore proactively manage their supply grids. This should enable them to automatically re-route power, monitor network assets and generally become more efficient.

Volvo have announced the forthcoming launch of their V60 Plug-In hybrid diesel car. This ‘halo model’ will see 1,000 hybrids being released in 2012, increasing to an expected 5,000 the following year.
The V60 hybrid offers three button-controlled driving modes: Pure, Default Hybrid and Power. According to Volvo this makes the v60 a “break-through model” as it gives you the power to switch easily between diesel, pure electric or hybrid. Although the car if not officially launched until later this year (they are saying some time between September – November), there are already some decent sounding stats being promised.
Firstly, the V60 will be able to run for up to 620 miles when running in the hybrid diesel/electric motor mode and up to 31 miles in Pure (electric motor) mode. Secondly it can accelerate, from a standing start, 0-60mph in just 5.9 secs in power mode and has a top speed of 142 mph. Finally, the car can also to up to 1.8 tonnes whilst driving in Pure mode.
Other vital stats on the v60 are that it will be a 2.4l, 5-cylinder diesel engine (215hp) with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. It will comply with the Euro 5 emissions standard and have Co2 emissions of 49 g/km (NEDC). The charge up time from depleted to full on a 16A fuse is just 3.5h increasing to 7.5h if using a 6A fuse.

HTC have well and truly embraced the notion that everyone is now using Facebook to manage their social lives. Their new ChaCha and Salsa (exclusively on o2) handsets promise to bring you “Facebook like never before” and come complete with a dedicated Facebook button to help you share photos and video the moment you capture them.
In addition to the button, you’ll also find a Facebook chat widget that allows you to switch between multiple private conversations in real time. You can sync the phone with your Facebook account so you won’t miss birthdays and other events and also they’ll both provide a real-time status ticker which will stream your friend’s latest updates.
Both handsets run the Android Gingerbread 2.3 OS which is complemented by HTC’s Sense ‘experience’. The o2-exclusive Salsa also comes with a 5MP camera complete with Carl Zeiss lens, dedicated capture key, autofocus and dual LED flash. There is also a forward facing camera which comes in handy for video calls. Connectivity-wise you have support for HSDPA (7.2Mbps), Bluetooth, Wifi (b/g/n) as well as an internal GPS antenna.
The ChaCha comes with a Blackberry-esque QWERTY keyboard which may come in handy given the number of messages and updates you’ll be likely to be posting to your Facebook account. Again it comes with a autofocus 5MP color camera as well as a VGA front camera. Connectivity is similar to the Salsa, with HDSPA support, Bluetooth, Wifi and GPS all provided.
Update: COMPETITION HAS FINISHED. We’ve got our hands on a LightSleeper, the natural sleeping aid from the people at Quincom, and we’re giving it away to one lucky winner! For those of you who don’t know what the LightSleeper is, here’s a quick explanation from the manfacturers:
LightSleeper helps you get to sleep in a completely natural way. When you turn on the device (and turn off the lights in your bedroom) LightSleeper projects a light on the ceiling above your bed. The light moves in a controlled, circular, and soothing manner. Follow the light with your eyes, while lying in bed. Gradually, your mind will relax and you’ll be ready to sleep well and enjoy a longer, better quality sleep – read more…
