Logitech Ultimate Ears 200vi Noise-Isolating Headset review

Now I’d like to think I’m not one to be suckered in by Celebrity Endorsements. I don’t particularly care if Paris Hilton uses your USB keys. If anything that’s off putting. And yes things like that do work their way onto press releases. Ultimate ears however have taken a different tack and have gone for endorsements from people whose opinion I respect. For this alone I love them.

“Leading musicians around the globe rely on Ultimate Ears when they perform onstage,” said Philippe Depallens, Logitech’s vice president and general manager of the Ultimate Ears product unit. “The same audio engineers who have been building Ultimate Ears custom stage monitors for a decade designed the audio drivers in the new Ultimate Ears line, so you’ll hear all the detail and depth of your favourite songs. Anyway you get your music — on your iPod®, iPhone®, portable music player, DVD player, handheld gaming devices or laptop — our newest earphones and headsets let you hear music the way it’s meant to be heard.”

Having won the love and respect of this group of people, I was keen to try a pair. Like respectable inner ear mid-range headphones, the audio ears have a little carrying pouch – like an oversized pill case, a range of tips to fit most ear sizes and a manual that no-one will ever read. The on-cord remote is sensibly-placed so you can easily adjust the volume without having to fiddle too far down the cord, and the tips are sweat resistant – making them ideal gym headphones.

As for the sound? Well I found them to have a reasonably full sounds but a little lacking in the booming bass I’ve come to depend on. In Herbie Hancock terms, I’d happily use them for One Finger Snap but would consider trading up if Chameleon came on. However for a £35 pair of headphones they certainly hold their own.
